This is a Story of The Hague, this is Luxviënne's story. She tells you more about her decision to move to the beautiful City of Peace and Justice, what she loves most and how she made The Hague her home.
Can you tell a bit about yourself, such as where you are from, what you are studying, and what led you to move to The Hague?
My name is Luxviënne, I’m 27 years old and I come from the island of Curaçao. I’ve been living in The Hague for 7 years. I moved to The Hague for my education, I am currently in my final year doing European Studies at The Hague University of Applied Sciences.
What were the main factors that led you to choose The Hague over other cities in the Netherlands?
Some of the most important factors for moving to The Hague were the international component of the city, I also wanted the city to be a nice mix between busy and peaceful. So when I visit the city center I have the busy aspect and when I’m at home it’s calmer. I really liked the public transportation possibilities because I don’t have a drivers license. It was important that it was a “student oriented” city with different activities for students to do such as student night on Thursday’s.
How did you experience the transition to living in The Hague, especially as a student?
I am very close with my family, so it was hard moving 9 hours away by plane, but we try to talk every day on the phone, the beauty of social media. My brother moved to the Netherlands this year so it brought a piece of home to me. In the beginning it was more difficult because the majority of the population speaks Dutch, but meeting international people who Dutch is also not a first language. We are able to communicate mostly in English which I prefer, but I try to push myself to speak more Dutch whenever I can. I also have my friends from back home that also moved to The Hague so we remind each other of home as well.
How would you describe the lifestyle in The Hague, and what amenities do you find most valuable to students?
My lifestyle in The Hague is varied, what I would like to describe it as an introverted extrovert. I love going out with my friends to eat at different restaurants in the city, I also love go dancing at different clubs in the city Centre but I am also a homebody who can have a relaxing night in and enjoy myself. I also enjoy the occasional solo movie dates at Pathe in the city Centre. During the summer I love to lay on the beach with friends.
What advice would you give to other students or young professionals considering moving to The Hague? What do you think are the do's and don'ts?
Try to make different types of friends from different backgrounds and ethnicities, as international studies we can all support each other. The city has different activities for everyone, but don’t just stay in your comfort zone. Explore all that the city has to offer.
